Chapter 10

Patience realized she was humming to herself as she slid the cupcakes into the oven. She felt like some kind of cartoon princess, making cupcakes and singing to herself, and it was ridiculous. She was ridiculous. But she couldn’t stop smiling and had been since Saturday. Brodie had taken her back home, kissed her again—and made it clear he’d wanted more, but had respected her decision not to take it further than a kiss—and even though she hadn’t seen him since then, they had been texting. He’d been working at Trevor’s office all day and she could admit she missed seeing him.

And kissing him.

It was probably better that she wasn’t distracted by him at work though. So here she was on Monday, making cupcakes for another friend—it was her specialty and her friends always begged her to make her special cream cheese cupcakes—while Oliver was sleeping.

“What are you doing?” a male voice demanded.

She glanced over her shoulder as she set one of the mixing bowls in the sink to find Antoine the chef looming in the doorway. “Making cupcakes.” Seemed pretty obvious what she was doing.

He frowned as he stepped into the room. He had on linen slacks, a loose linen tunic, and his blond hair was thick and sun-kissed, making him look more like a surfer than a chef. He was only a few inches taller than her, but had a presence that made him seem bigger than he was. “You have a kitchen in the guesthouse,” he said tartly.

Surprised by his rudeness—but not going to feed into it—she looked away from him and turned the water on hot to start cleaning the dishes. As she did, she glanced at the monitor. Oliver was still sleeping soundly.

“Excuse me, did you hear what I said?” She could feel him moving up behind her and on instinct she tensed.

But she wasn’t going to flinch and let her fears based on the past take over. This guy was harmless and clearly wanted to argue with her. But she worked with kindergarteners on a daily basis. She was so not getting into anything with him. She added soap to the sponge. “I heard you, but I’m not sure what response you want. I’m making cupcakes while Oliver is sleeping, and I’m not in your way.” What was with this guy?

“Must be nice having a job where you can slack off,” he grumbled as he stalked toward the pantry door.

Holy hell. Something had crawled up this guy’s ass, apparently. Or maybe he was always a dick. She chose silence instead of engaging in dialogue with him. She’d learned that was sometimes the best way to defuse any situation. She started washing the dishes she’d used and setting them onto the drying rack next to the sink.

“You better not have used any of my ingredients.”

Okay, enough was enough. She shut off the water and turned to face him as she wiped her hands on the gray-and-white checkered dish towel. “Trevor said I could use this kitchen anytime I want.
